My newspaper saved me $25!

January 7th, 2007 at 07:30 pm

My dh frequently complains that the Sunday newspaper is a waste of money (probably because he just reads the sports and comic sections and throws the rest away!).

Our Sunday paper usually has a sticker on it that say's there are $35 in money-saving coupons inside (or whatever the amount is). I'm not much of a coupon cutter, but today's paper had a brown paper bag (grocery size bag) from Office Max inside, which allowed shoppers to save 15% off all items you could fit into the bag.

I was planning on stocking up for tax season today anyway, so I grabbed that bag and off to Office Max I went. Since I was stocking up on higher priced items like toner and ink cartridges, I saved over $25 on my total by using the shopping bag!

So is the Sunday paper a waste of money? No way! I saved enough to buy the Sunday paper for the next two years, so my dh can continue reading the funnies and sports section every Sunday without worrying about wasting money.

I think I'll add the savings to our vacation fund...

I saw that bag in the paper today when I was cutting out coupons Smile Glad to see you could put it to use. I thought about seeing if I could stick a laptop in it. LOL I have to wait until tax time to get that anyway.

They don't let you use the bag for computers, otherwise I would have stuck a laptop in it! lol!

You're lucky! Our Sunday newspaper doesn't have any coupons at allFrown

Wow! I'm too poor right now to stock up on anything, but what a great savings! Maybe you should test out some of the coupons too! At least it may save you sales tax!

I live in Raymore! I used to live in Independence (at The Mansion Apartment complex) but then we bought our house! Nice to meet people close by! Smile
Your job sounds really nice! I work for a bank (but unfortunately have amassed a lot of credit card debt). Baby steps, I guess! Smile

My dh buys the paper simply for the Fry's ads (Fry's is a big electronic store out west). I Don't even think it is the coupons - just the ads. LOL. But we have saved a ton on all his toys accordingly, he waits for the best deals. Gotten so many things free with rebate.

But we have discussed tossing the paper many times (For me it is an environmental thing). They keep extending too - weekend used to be Sat-Sun, then added Friday - now they added thursday - and charge more accordingly. I told dh I would go buy the sunday paper every weekend instead, but we decided with all the coupons and everything we were better of getting the "weekend" subscription, though we just toss most of the paper every week, which makes me cringe.

They keep pushing us to buy the full week for more coupons too - a big sales tactic actually.

Well you are not the only one! Wink
Oh yeah - too bad about the laptop - Darn!
